AFRINIC organises a series of insightful webinars on various internet-related topics. These webinars are open, inclusive platforms where individuals from diverse backgrounds and origins come together to discuss topics aligned with spurring digital growth on the continent. In this blog post, we will delve into the highlights of the 2023 webinar series, which attracted a wide audience of industry professionals and experts.

Webinar Series Overview

The AFRINIC Webinar series aims to explore the current and future landscape of Internet accessibility and robustness for the digitization of Africa. Held on a bi-monthly basis via the Zoom platform, our webinars feature expert speakers, including network engineers, policymakers, regulators, academics, decision makers and civil society representatives. Participants are encouraged to actively engage with the speakers and panel of experts by asking questions and participating in discussions.

In quarter two (2) we recorded a total of 768 attendees, for the 5 webinars we organised. The series also garnered an average Net Promoter Score (NPS*) of 62, indicating satisfaction among participants.

The AFRINIC Ecosystem: An Introduction to AFRINIC
The series kicked off with an informative session delivered by Arthur Carindal, AFRINIC's Head of Stakeholder Engagement. With 243 participants primarily from the IT and telecommunications sector, attendees gained valuable insights into the ecosystem of AFRINIC, including its activities and operations.

The African Internet Exchange Point (IXP) Story
This interactive webinar attracted more than 300 participants and featured a panel discussion with esteemed experts such as Fiona Asonga (CEO of TESPOK), Kyle Spencer (Executive Director of UIXP), Nishal Goburdhan (Senior Internet Infrastructure Analyst at PCH), Donald Jolley (Operations Support at DINX), and Jean Baptiste Milligo (Director of Internet Technology and Development at ISOC). The panel explored various perspectives and experiences in the implementation of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in Africa.

Introduction to AFRINIC  - Governance model
Kishna Dhondee, AFRINIC's legal officer, provided insights into the organisation's governance structure during this webinar. With 122 participants in attendance, the session shed light on the various aspects of AFRINIC's governance and its importance for promoting effective internet governance in Africa.

Introduction to the AFRINIC Policy Development Process
Madhvi Gokool, Senior IP Resources Specialist, Brice Abba, Stakeholder Development Manager and Darwin Costa, AFRINIC Policy Development Co-chair, explained the policy development process at AFRINIC. With 92 participants joining on Zoom, this webinar fostered understanding and collaboration among attendees interested in shaping policies that influence Africa's digital growth.

AFRINIC Services Demystified: A New Member's Guide to Building Better Internet Infrastructure
The final webinar in Quarter two (2) focused on welcoming new members to AFRINIC. James Chirwa, AFRINIC's Head of Member Services, provided an update on the services offered by the organisation. Although attended by 11 members, this webinar provided valuable insights into the resources available to new members for their digital growth journey.

The State of RPKI Route Origin Validation in Africa: Strengthening Routing Security
Our Quarter Three (3) kickstarter was an insightful webinar on ‘’The State of RPKI Route Origin Validation in Africa: Strengthening Routing Security’.’ This session recorded an impressive attendance of 366 participants on July 13. It was a highly interactive sessions that saw panellists: Kevin Chege, Director of Internet Development, Internet Society (ISOC), Mark Tinka, Head of Engineering, SEACOM, Dr. Amreesh Phokeer, Internet Measurement and Data Expert, Internet Society (ISOC), David Njuki, Senior Systems Engineer, AFRINIC, Ben Maddison, Director, Workonline Communications and Willy Manga, DO Eng, The webinar explored the current landscape, challenges, and best practices surrounding RPKI adoption and its impact on routing security in the African region. The webinar also highlighted the pivotal role of AFRINIC in providing the infrastructure and support for RPKI-based routing security.

Next, In the pipeline, in collaboration with ICANN, two sessions will unite experts on the DNS system and promote industry operational best practices for a secure and resilient DNS ecosystem in the Africa region.
