Achievements of AFRINIC in 2022:
A Year of Resilience and Growth

Looking back at 2022, AFRINIC has a lot to be proud of. Despite numerous hurdles, the team stayed dedicated to our goal of supporting the African Internet community by providing effective services in a global multi-stakeholder environment. We persevered with resilience and hope, and the following are some of AFRINIC's significant achievements and activities.

About AFRINIC

The African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) is the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for Africa. It is responsible for the distribution and management of Internet number resources (IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and Autonomous System Numbers – ASNs) for the African and Indian Ocean region. It was founded in 2004 and is a non-governmental, not-for-profit, membership-based organisation headquartered in Mauritius. The policies governing the distribution of Internet number resources by AFRINIC are defined by the AFRINIC community using a bottom-up, community-driven policy development process (PDP). The Board of Directors then ratifies these policies. AFRINIC also plays a leading role in education and capacity building as well as in IP infrastructure development and reinforcement throughout the region.

Core Functions

AFRINIC’s core function is to assign and allocate Internet number resources (IPv4, IPv6 and ASNs) to its members and to provide related services, including RPKI and the management of the Reverse DNS (rDNS) zones for the Internet number resources it allocates and assigns. In addition to its core function, AFRINIC

  • Supports the community-based process for developing number resource policies.
  • Provides training and education services to its members, governments and the wider community to support capacity building and infrastructure development throughout the region.
  • Collaborates with regional and international organisations on Internet-related matters to ensure the needs of the region are taken into account.
  • Promotes and supports an open, stable, secure and resilient Internet through technologies and projects including RPKI, DNSSEC, local Internet Exchange Point (IXP) set up and deployment of root server copies throughout Africa.

Vision: “A secure and accessible Internet for sustainable digital growth in Africa”
Mission: “To serve the African Internet community by delivering efficient services in a global multi-stakeholder environment”
Core values: EPIC (■ Excellence ■ Passion ■ Integrity ■ Community Driven)

AFRINIC has continued to responsibly manage Internet Number Resources for the African continent. In 2022, the organization allocated 249,596 IPv4 addresses, and there are still 1.4 million addresses left in the pool. In addition, 135 IPv6 prefixes and 221 Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) were allocated. These allocations and assignments will help to ensure that Africa's Internet resources are adequate to meet the needs of its growing economies.

We saw an increase in our membership in 2022, with 195 new members joining the community, bringing the total membership to 2116.

The Africa Internet Summit 2022 (AIS’22) was held in a hybrid style, with over 500 people attending both in person and virtually. More than 200 members also took part in the AFRINIC Members Connect online event. This event provided a venue for African Internet stakeholders to meet and discuss current concerns and trends for a better Internet in Africa.

Our commitment to empowering the Internet community through education and training continues to yield positive results. Our trainings achieved an overall median NPS of 50.25 while online courses had over 3000 enrollments from 130 countries, representing an increase of nearly 200% from 2021. The team through our Deployment Operationalisation (DO) program also conducted IPv6 and RPKI deployment events. The results of the DO program were concluding as we achieved the following milestones::
  • 66 DO Helpdesk Requests from 28 countries
  • 93 Helpdesk Calls for 59 organisations from 21 countries
  • 3 (e-)Deployathons, attended by 43 engineers from 7 organisations
  • 55 organisations from 17 countries accomplish 95 deployment KPIs
Additionally,
  • 26 operators from 13 countries obtained a correct IPv6 prefix
  • 5 operators from 4 countries made an announcement of IPv6 prefix
  • 11 operators from 9 countries had valid route6 object
  • 8 operators from 6 countries had correct RPKI ROA

Our policy development community is committed to producing policies to assist the growth and development of the Internet in the African region. These policies are intended to ensure that Africa has a robust and sustainable Internet environment. Last year, one policy was ratified and is awaiting implementation, two policies were withdrawn, and three policies are awaiting board ratification.

We also made significant strides in engagement activities, as AFRINIC interacted with around 200 members through the Jenga Initiative. We participated in 38 ICT forums across Africa and worked with governments on programs to enhance capacity for IPv6 deployment. Additionally, we signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) for IPv6 deployment and internet critical infrastructure enhancement and 57 activities were carried out under AFRINIC's Internet Development Program, benefiting 2,500 people.

Our publications for the year included the Annual Report 2021, 59 news articles on our website, and four media correspondences highlighting our operational activity. We also efficiently communicated with our members and community through mailing lists and social media channels. We delivered 181 unique publicity campaigns, boosting the social media audience to 24,680 up by 5186 new followers. A total of 111,477 people visited the website.

We are proud of what we achieved, and we remain optimistic about what the future holds. We will continue to adapt, innovate, and persevere, to create value for our community and beyond.
